Community Conversations being held in 3 different regions of the state.  Other agencies and programs will also be present to provide information and we are expecting a great community turnout.

Disability Rights Mississippi (DRMS), The University of Southern Mississippi Institute for Disability Studies (IDS), and Mississippi Council on Developmental Disabilities (MSCDD) will be hosting Community Conversations events for people with disabilities, family members, service providers, professionals, educators, and city officials in three different regions of the state in August.  The events are interactive with a dynamic opportunity for information sharing, networking, and to increase the social capitol of people with special needs and different abilities.

The Community Conversations events will kick off on August 8th in Gulfport at the Knight Non-Profit Center, followed by an event at the Southaven Public Library on August 20th, and culminating on August 27th in Vicksburg at the United Way of West Central Mississippi at 920 South Street.  Each event will be from 4:30 – 6:30 p.m. and is free to the public.

The partnering agencies have been providing these community outreach opportunities for the past nine years across the state.  DRMS, IDS, and MSCDD are funded by the federal Administration on Disabilities (AoD) to ensure that people with developmental disabilities receive services as required by the Developmental Disabilities Act.  The Community Conversations events are for people with all types of disabilities.

Each event will feature informational displays about services and programs available at community organizations and agencies. Next week in Gulfport, for example, representatives will be present from the Department of Rehabilitation Services, Pine Belt Mental Health, Department of Health, Department of Mental Health, Coalition for Citizens with Disabilities (Parent Training and Information Center), the Jackson County Civic Action agency, Millcreek, and Families First.  The resources and information shared at these events is invaluable and the feedback received from attendees helps to guide the work and projects for each of the partnering agencies.
